HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Computer experts?

We loaded the new Norton antivirus 2006 on Michelle's laptop. Now her computer is virtually dead. I tried to reboot but when it comes up nothing will load and it freezes. It is on Windows XP and it is about 4 years old. I can't start it in safe mode. I can bring up the control panel but then it won't let me open anything in the control panel.
I am going to try and reload Windows with the recovery disc tonight but I have a feeling that the disc drive is going to be frozen as well.

Any suggestions?

Prior to using the recovery disk, you should be able to recover using the stupid XP back up dates that the computer does itself on occasion. Michelle's will have this - she doesn't even have to tell it to do it.

IF that doesn't work, let me know. You may want to check out the Norton site for a download fix. Same with the Windows site. If not, lemme know. I had a similar issue at one point.

That's the problem. I can't even get it go to the back up. Once I re start it comes up and it shows the desktop icons but in that funny looking way (how they look before they load) then the loading completely freezes. So I can't get into any programs on the computer at all.

Okay...does it give you the chance to hit Fsomething or other (F2, maybe) while it's booting up to go into setup mode? I can't remember if that's a Win98 trick or if it works with XP too. If it does, you can force it to start in safe mode.

If not, yeah, you're prob going to have to use the recovery disk. IF you have one. I? do not. Made it nearly impossible when Larry did something similar to his.

It may give me a chance to do that. I will try that tonight. I can't do anything until she brings it home with her.
I am hoping that I ahve the recovery disks. I have bought two computers since then and have no idea where half of my stuff is.
*crosses fingers* I'm hoping.

She is NOT a happy camper today.

Let me know if you fixed it. Otherwise we will ask Jim.

PS Are you panicing coz this means you will have to share your computer with Michelle.

I will NEVER, let me repeat, NEVER share my computer. Dell is my mistress and I will not share.

Okay, I found out I need to hit F8 to start in safe mode. I'm going to try that and hope it works.
Otherwise I will be coming back to you too in a severe panic.

Welcome back, Monsty. *smooch*
How was the weekend?

Gotta run. I'm hoping I can do the computer fix.

Did you try hitting it? I've seen people do that in movies and it seems to help. *grin*

I always check the plugs. This accomplishes nothing but I feel useful crawling around under the computer desk. Once I found a quarter!

I was loading some estimating on a laptop at work the other day that did have windows xp. The same thing happened. Our IT person told me that windows xp takes up alot of something and once you do that if the computer is only a something there isn't room for this other stuff w/o purchase something and it is cheapier to get a new one. Sorry I don't remember what all the somethings are. I'm computer iliterate.

*hugs*
