What's in a name?
When you email and/or talk on the phone and/or hangout with fellow posters, what name do you use (their real name, or their posting name) and what do you prefer to be called?
For me, if someone has given me a personalized nickname, I prefer that they use that. Otherwise, I don't mind either my real name or my user nickname of Knockers or any of the various nicknames that have been given to me. There ARE certain people who I do not want calling me Knockers but they know who they are and why I don't want them to call me that name.
So what about you?
Fuck. On an unrelated note, another row of dead pixels has now shown up on my computer screen. The first one was a vertical blue line down the right side of the computer. The new one is a vertical red line down the left side. *sigh*
Since it's a laptop, I have to send the entire computer in to get fixed, not just the screen. Waaaaah. It could take a couple of weeks to get get it to them, have it fixed and have it sent back. *pout*

As for a name for myself, I'm indifferent. Most RL people call me Tab. Here, MM, Tab, or motormouth all work. I call you Carey, all the time. :)
Stupid pixels!!
You will always be Bravie to me. I'm not sure I've ever called you Carey.
I think every peep I've met in real life calls me Augie. When I'm called my real name (especially when it's in an email or PM) I know the subject matter is serious--not that I'm getting yelled at, it's just that almost everyone in blog land who knows me uses my real name when the conversation is serious.
*re-reads post*
Does any of that make sense?
I'm very fond of my Bob nickname. However, with people I've met (HD and Iggy) we've used real names.
However, I still think of them as HD and Iggy.
I think I would faint if Augie ever called me Carey.
RL people call me either Jennifer or Jen. They're not allowed to call me Jenny. :-)
Online peeps always refer to me as Luna. Even when I send emails to them, most of the time I sign them as Luna. Sometimes I'll sign Luna/Jen.
Boo is the only peep I've met in real life and we use our online names and RL names interchangebly. When I call her to set up our meetings, I always say "It's Luna!" But that's partly because I think everyone knows more than one Jennifer.
Call me Ishmael.
LOL Arkie. I like using on line names. Knockers, Augie, Nookie, MM, Nutz, Bob, Boo, Luna, Coco, Swami, etc.
Well Zombs is my real name.
What Zombs said, Breezy is my real name.
I have yet to hang out or talk on the phone to fellow posters. So I have no idea what they'd call me.
I kind of like being called Nutz/Nutzy around here. ...and I like using peeps screen names too. When I first blogged, I was used to calling you knockers from the boards, then began calling you Carey in the blogs. Sometimes I have to think about what to call you because of where I'm posting. I still call you knockers over there and Carey over here, for the most part.
IRL I am either called by my first name by my family & peers or Mrs. M---- by my students. Do you think I should have them all start calling me Nutzy?
LOL @ Arkie.
Luna, I agree. If you called and said this is Jennifer, I would have to think about which one.
Nutzy, enough people have called me Carey on the boards without thinking that it doesn't really even phase me. And I think you should go by Mrs. Nutzy.
Puffy, not only are you Puffy but I will always think of your DH as Mr. Puffy.
Zombs and Breezy. It isn't real smart to use your real names on the internet. There are some wackos out there.
Hmmmm, I kind of like nicknames when it comes from friends (lots of my friends call me Kimmy when they are being sweet or drunk).
For online peeps, I usually call them by their screennames when talking to Chris. When I'm talking to a peep face-to-face, I'll try to use their real name.
I used to have to quiz Michelle because I knew that she would meet some peeps. Now she is very good about it. For instance, she know Augie lives in the state where she lives and she knows her real name. And so on and so forth for quite a few peeps. Sometimes I will refer to someone and she gives me a blank look and then I will say "you know, so and so, they are from (insert city and state)" and then most of the time she will get it.
I call you Carey almost always always because I feel like I really got to know you as a person here in blogland rather than on OT.
I have 2 or 3 people I met in OT who I call by their real name in emails & stuff, but nobody I met or came to know well in blogland yet.
I have 2 online names - Swami and Matahari. The Mata name is more private and rarely used anywhere but this one place I go (and no, it is not a porn board, lol.)
IRL I have no kicknames and am always just Martha.
Well, Tom has lots of pet names for me, but I'm not going to share those!
I think that's the reason that I chose to use my real name in blogland. Because I felt it was a more personal venue than the boards. And the purpose of the bloggy thing was, at least for me, a chance to get to know people on a more personal level.
Oh trust me, Michelle has quite a few nicknames for me. Most are not so much nice at all. *grin*
I am going to start calling you "Jo", I think.
*snort*
Having become a bit of a peep meet 'ho in recent weeks, I realize now how much I don't like being called by my username in RL.
Maybe its because I don't resemble the baby-face sig pic that "Meemo" is generally associated with. I was young and immature when I first picked that name ;-), and I don't think it's really a true and accurate reflection of who I am.
But alas, I will forever be Meemo. However, if you meet me in real life (which I'm sure will happen eventually), you can call me Kevin :-)
Oh, and Glow called you from the baseball game on Friday, but we couldn't get through to your line :-(
It depends on how well I know someone. If I'm really close to someone, I tend to use their real name all the time. Except for Glow. I don't think I've ever used her full name. Heh. But you've always been Carey to me. (Are you saying you want me to call you Carebear all the time since that's my special nickname for you?)
I guess I prefer that people call me Jen, because I think that is how most people really know me. But if people want to call me Star, or something more like my screen name, that's fine too.
(BTW, I was cleaning some old messages off my answering machine a couple weeks ago and there was the message of you singing happy birthday to me last year. You sang "Happy Birthday dear Starry" and it sounded really weird. LOL.)
Meeeeemo. *grin* Unfortunately I was unavailable when she called. *pout*
But I can't wait to meet you and give you a hug and call you Kevin. *grin*
Jen, I don't think I could call you anything other than Jen anymore. Star does not feel right anymore.
You can call me Carey or Carebear. I think it depends on the context of the conversation. *swalt*
I always call you Carey. I don't think you have ever called me by my name when I talk with you.
IRL, I wouldn't care if you called me Tkit or Jennifer. But no Jen or Jenny. It's Jennifer. No need to shorten it.
I love my nickname "Nookie". Most peeps from online call me that when they meet me IRL. It would be so strange to hear anyone call me by my real name.
If I call someone on the phone, I will always say "it's Nookie" rather than my real name. Not because I think peeps know more than one Carole, but because I always think they wouldn't know who it was if I used my real name.
Now, when it comes to calling online peeps by their names, I'll either use their screen name or a variation of their screen names. I tried calling Augie by her real name when I met her but I just couldn't LOL. She's Augie! and Boo. I just could not call her by her real name. She had to be Boo. Carey, I know that I would never call you Knockers. I may call you Bravie at the other place but anywhere else, you're Carey. The only time I'll use someone's real name is if their screen name is their real name, is too long (ie Can't Stand to Look), or if I don't know them very well.
Tkit, it's funny, because when I talk to you, I don't think I use your real name. But when I refer to you to other people, I use your real name a lot.
Nookie, Michelle likes to call you Nookie. *grin*
Meemo, once people saw your RL pic the baby-face dude was forever driven from memory. Trust me.
(I better go put this on the Meemo blog to be sure he sees it.)
Nookie, I know a Carole and you are no Carole.
Unlike my blog brother, I like being called by my screenname when I meet peeps IRL. I figure that they know HD a lot better than they know Carl, plus there's a certain feeling of togetherness or inclusion that comes from having a nickname with a history and a context behind it. I tend to be rather reserved in most real life situations (if you can believe that) and I never had a nickname of any sort prior to HD so I enjoy the feeling of connection and acceptance that comes along with peeps calling me that name.
I should add that the longer I blog, the more I feel like HD and Carl are an integrated individual for those among the blogger community --- but I still see HD as a very separate persona as far as the bulk of peeps over at that other place are concerned.
Nookie, you'll always be Nookie. My mother-in-law is Carole, so I can't assosciate Nookie with Carole. ;-)
TKit - I don't mind being called Jen. What amuses me is how long it took people in Virginia to start calling me Jen. When I lived in New York everyone called me Jen, but when I moved here, everyone called me Jennifer when I first met them. It was so formal. Even Dwight. We'd been dating for almost a year before he called me Jen for the first time. But I agree on Jenny. No Jenny!
Look at all the Jennys in my blog.
*runs*
I'm horrible with names, so when I meet peeps, I just go for a generic, "Yo, b!tch." Works for me.
Not surprisingly, I'm also a Jenny.
I think i will call you "Jennygothbitch"
Like that's the first time I've heard that.
Luna- strangely enough, I *like* the formalness of Jennifer.
My husband has never, NOT ONCE, called me Jen or Jenny. Baby, JT and Jennifer. That's it.
Fun fact: All the Jennifer's in Carey's blog right now, all have the same middle name as well. Techincally anyway. I changed my middle when I got married.
I find it amusing because my ex girlfriend who I unlovingly refer to as C**t, is Jennifer Lynn.
*smacks forehead* The really rotten one that you told me about? She's a Jennifer Lynn? Well that freakin' ruins it. Although, I would like to point out that my Lynne did have the E on the end.
*mutters* Rotten bitch had to go and fvck up my cool kids Jennifer Lynn(e) club. *sigh* I will NEVER be a cool kids. Fvcking uncoil.
heh I have a friend IRL whose name is Jenifer Lyn!
That's the one, Tkit. *shudder*
But no worries, she did not have the E at the end, therefore making her uncoil. And? Nobody here could ever compare to her level of bitch. Not in a million years could anyone compare. If MikkiD reads this, I am sure she will confirm this.
You? Are uber coil. You wouldn't be my IG if you weren't. *grin*
Not surprisingly, my middle name is also Lynn.
I think Gothmom might be my ex.
*snort* at gothmog.
Oh I agree Carey. What she put you through was bordering on inhumane and criminal. F'ing db.
And you Tkit? are like 1000 times hotter than she was. She was a bitch, I won't take that away from her. But she was hot. Which is probably why I was so whipped. Because she was WAAAAY out of my league in the looks department. But she pales in comparison to you. *grin*
Carey, you are too kind. I felt the same why about my ex-fiancee which is why I had such ai difficult time with him. He was a Structure model at one point. Fvcking hot but a complete and total idiot. I'll take my pleasantly handsome husband any freakin' day.
T-kit, your DH isn't just pleasantly handsome. He's HOT! As are you *wolf whistle*
*runs before Carey can whack me for whistling at t-kit*
:-)
I know where you live, Miss Nookie. And I also know where you are moving. (okay, so I don't really know your new address but I know people who know people).
*WHACKS* Nookie. Back off!!!!!
If your ex was hot, then there's no way I could possibly be your ex.
I will admit to being a bitch, tho.
LMFAO @ Jennygothbitch!!!
I forgot before... some of my students call me Professor M----. I guess I'll become Professor Nutzy!
My daughter is Sara Lyn
Even though my real name is easy for people to use because it's right there in my screen name, most folks still call me Sherps. I tend to call people by their real names, with only a few exceptions.
I've recently started calling you Dave, again. *grin*
Hmm...Well, I've only talked to one OTer/blogger on the phone before and I think we used screen and RL names interchangeably.
Some of you, though, who's names I know, I think of by your RL name. Others, like Boo and Augie and Arkie to name a couple, have RL names that just don't seem to fit my perception of them. Therefore, they are their screen name.
And I'm both Momma and my RL name to at least 2 people. *grin*
I have no problem referring to you as Momma and your real name. They both fit you.
*runs in*
Am I late for the Jennifer Lynn Cool Club meeting? *grin* And it's so funny how we all hate being called Jenny. We need a secret handshake. :)
Um. The UPS guy just called me Jenny-poo. He must be destroyed.
Only destroy him if you can use *all* his parts afterwards. Otherwise, it's just cruelty.
I agree with HD. It's fun to have a nickname. Sort of like being in a secret club with code words.
There will be a Meeting of the Martha over in my blog!
*shuts off computer and leaves, confident she is a party of one*
You have become Carey to me. I would probably call you Bravie, but Knockers is so gone for me now.
For everyone else, you're just your screen names to me. When I met Nookie, Syren and CSTL, that's who they were to me. Although I almost called CSTL by his real name because CSTL is four sylables. And that's about as long as 2 blocks (sorry inside joke).
I can't imagine calling Luna anything but Luna. That's how she's listed in my phone. When I get emails from you people, I almost delete them because I don't know who the heck you are otherwise.
