The Great Quake of 1906, 100 years ago today

http://www.sfgate.com/greatquake/ <-----very cool site about the Great Quake Remembering the 1906 great quake of San Francisco. It hit at 5:12am on April 18th, 1906. There are various reports on the magnitude of the quake. Anywhere from 7.7 to 8.3 on the richter scale. To put it in perspective, the quake in 1989 registered at 7.1 (reports also vary on this) and you saw the damage that was done then. And that was in modern times. Imagine 100 years ago the damage that was done. I could post a million pictures but I won't. I decided to post our City Hall prior to and after the quake. This first picture is City hall in 1902. Prior to the quake

This second picture is City hall in 1906. After the quake.

This is City Hall today.

Wow, that's unbelievable. As scary as the 1989 quake was, I cannot imagine how horrible that one would have been.

Thanks for sharing this!

Scary pictures. I hope that never happens again.

Were you in the city in 1989. My brother was and I worried so much. He did call me later during the night and described what was going on.

Has it stopped raining? I'd hate to see the buildings slid away from rain.

I thought of you this morning too, Carey.

Did you go to the thing at Lotta's Fountain? This is probably the last big hurrah for any centarian survivors.

I remember how impressed I was by the big rubber bumpers the newly redone city hall sits on. Plus, the building itself is just gorgeous.

*hopes it's another hundred years before it all comes tumbling down again*

Were you on the toilet, Glow? :(

I was not in the heart of SF in the 1989 quake but I was in the bay area. About 15 miles south of SF. Which was closer to the quake's epicenter. One day I'll post that entire story.
I wasn't afraid during the quake, it was after the quake was over that things got chaotic and scary.

I was not able to go to the city this morning for the ceremony. They were blasting the syrens at 5:12am though and then had a moment of silence.
Unfortunately I have too much that I need to do at home after work or I would pop up to the city tonight.

I have my moments, Sonya. This one just happens to be close to home.

*whacks Breezy* I was bartending in 1989. I was at work when the quake hit.

Was listening to some interesting facts on the radio this a.m. The courthouse burned down in like 28 minutes...total devastation.

They now have earthquaked proofed the buildings right?

How about Carey-fart proofed?

The link above has a lot of interesting facts as well. Everything has either been retro-fitted or is in progress now. We got us some tall buildings. I would not want to be in Ginger's office when the big one hits. Her office overlooks the entire bay area.
No poot proofing being done though.

*glares at Breezy* No, I was not dancing that night. *throws foam star at Breezy*

I don't want a big one to hit! Unless you're here visiting me when it happens.

I would prefer that a big one not hit either. 1989 was enough for me. As I drove to work this morning, I looked to the left of the freeway past the airport which is sort of "hotel row" and I looked at the empty space where the Amfac hotel once stood. It was destroyed in 89 and had to be torn down. Eerie, actually.

Even more freaky is when we go to the lake and drive by the freeway that is no longer there because it collapsed.
Michelle still gets a little freaky when we drive over the Bay Bridge. Because that is the one that collapsed in the last quake.

*pulls foam arrow out of ass*
Good aim, girl.

My mom is paranoid that a quake is going to hit when I'm out there. She asked if I would know what to do. I said "Um. Stand in a doorway?" and she said "Yeah, I think that's right. I don't really know." LOL.

I drive by things that aren't there all the time. Sometimes I meet Tom in front of a building that burned down 10 years ago. They built something else there but it doesn't matter because Tom and I still meet in front of where Lula's used to be.

I am an earthquake expert. I have the best earthquake kit on the block. *grin* And I know what to do in case of an earthquake.

Step #1, open bottle of vodka.
Step #2...who cares, we're drinking vodka.

No way. I love quakes. I really do. I don't love the damage that they cause nor the loss of life. But a good little shaker in the 5.0 range? Great adrenaline rush. I have no fear of earthquakes.

I'm glad you said you like quakes, Carey. I was thinking it might be kind of cool if there was one while we were out there. Just a little one, just to see what it's like, ya know. But I didn't want to say anything 'cause I thought that would be stupid/insensitive. :)

My first earthquake was in Goa, India. It was the middle of the night and I thought my stupid first husband was shaking the bed, so I kicked him a couple of times and told him to stop it. He kicked me back and told me to quit kicking and quit shaking the bed too!

Then we heard all these people screaming and got up to look out our window at the street full of hysterical people, calling on St. Francis Xavier to save them. (St. Francis is buried in Goa.)

A bunch of roof tiles fell and stuff fell off shelves but I missed the whole thing because I thought my husband was just rocking the bed to annoy me, lol. No adrenaline rush.

Now I known what it fels like so I would be smart enought to feel scared and break out the vodka!

I would be deathly afraid to be near an earthquake. Probably because I have never experienced one and they sound very scary.

*does a shot of vodka to calm my nerves*

Nutz, I know people who moved out of the state after the 89 quake. It scared them that much.
