Counting my blessings!!!!

So last night after I took a nice long bath to help me feel better, we got a phone call asking if we were okay. As it turns out the mountain where we live was on fire. 200 acres were burned and we were sort of in the path. The fire came within a mile of our house.
Luckily nobody lost their life and nobody lost their house. The fire department was on their shit and they deserve some sort of award for what they did yesterday. They wasted no freaking time in attackin gthe fire aggressively. I have a lot of respect for those guys, I tell ya.
Anyhow, I called the fire department and they put us on evacuation watch. We were told that maybe we might want to put our important papers in the car and we might want to make sure that if we had pets, we knew where they were and we could get to them if needed.
Michelle and I did what we had to do. Got the important papers together, got the cats together and then just started to pack things that can't be replaced. Pictures, keepsakes and such. That is a scary thing to have to do. To stand in the middle of a room full of your possessions and have to pick and choose what you will take. Weird.
Luckily they got the fires out and all is safe. But now today after work I have the task of putting the house back together. What sucks is that I am coming down with something. I have body aches and a slight fever. Imagine doing all that shit last night, running around, letting the adrenaline rule you and do it with a fever. waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
Here is a link to the story and it has a couple of pictures. The one picture with the sign "South San Francisco, The Industrial city" is the view from my house. The hill with those words on it is basically my back yard. So you can see how close it was to my house.

Wow, not so fun. I thought maybe you were excited at the thought of your new firemen friends coming to visit.

I'm glad you had that time to prepare. I don't even want to think about packing up the important belongings (was your Wii one of them?).

First - I am glad you are okay, and all your preparation was for nothing. I can only imagine how stressful that must have been! Tom and I have talked about what we would pack if we only had minutes to pack - but we have never had to do it. It would be heart-breaking.

Firemen rock.

I hope you feel better!

Eep. That's pretty freakin close! Glad it's out and you didn't have to evacuate but you must have freaked out. Hope you feel better!

Looking back, it is kind of amusing.
First of all, my choice of underwear this morning was between slim (meaning a pair that is 14 sizes to small) and none (meaning a thong) because in my rush last night I packed every single pair of underwear. And bras. And jeans that fit me. It's also that time of month and I just don't like wearing a thong during that time. No reason other than I feel fat. *rolls eyes*
Luckily I found a pair of underwear that were not packed (everything is either in one of our cars or in the garage because we didn't unpack last night) I found a ratty pair of jeans and an old bra.
But it's funny what you pack. For some reason I felt the need to pack all of the tampons and toilet paper in the house. And a tent. Um, we were going to go to my parent's house had we evacuated. I'm pretty sure they have toilet paper. And water. And food. And a first aid kit. *snort*
I packed as if the entire Bay Area had burned down and I would need these things. My Mom was laughing at me this morning. But last night these things seemed important. *snort*
And I remember when I packed a bag full of shoes that I told myself I would be miserable without a pair of flip flops. so I made sure to pack my favorite flip flops. LOL

I'm sitting here laughing because I almost posted that lots of underwear would be on my list. But then I kept laughing because you packed a tent. *snort*

I think it's the packing of all the toilet paper that has me baffled. I mean, really. Toilet paper? *shakes head*

Toilet paper makes sense to me because I would have been so scared I'd need it.

I'm so glad you are okay. I too cannot imagine. Just can't. Michael and I were talking about this recently with all of the storms we have been getting here. He was laughing at me taking pillows and a comforter down to the bathroom downstairs. He told me in an emergency to just grab the external hard drive.

I didn't realize the gun safe wasn't fireproof. I guess I now see why people have safe deposit boxes.

While it is funny that you grabbed TP, I think it's a natural item to grab in such a case. What if you hadn't been going to your mom's? I'd rather have too much stuff than not enough.

Did you pack all of your pictures of me?

How scary for you guys. I can't imagine deciding what to pack and not pack. I'm glad you all are ok.

Feel better, Sunshine.

Yikes! That's scary close!

I thought you were going to say that you ended up fighting the fire along side you fellow firemen. *grin*

Ick, what a frightening thought. I think I'd grab the computer because all our pictures are on it. Doubt I'd even think about TP. *snort*

The smoke here has been just awful. The sun was red all day and my eyes hurt. I had a massive headache all day too. I'm just glad they got the fire before it got too close to you.

*smooch*

I forgot to ask about the smoke. There were fires in North Carolina a couple of weeks ago, and the smoke made it all the way up here.

I can't imagine what it was like for you right there.

You packed toilet paper?
*laughs hysterically*
Tampons I can see, but not the tp.

How many bags did it take to hold all your 49ers paraphrenalia? You packed all of that, right? And in a pinch you could use some of those pendants for toi...

Oh, nevermind.
*grins*

giggles at Swami.
It was very strange standing in my 49er room trying to decide what to take. In the end, I grabbed autographs. Not all of my autographs though. Only the ones that were obtained either by myself or by someone who I know.
I didn't pack the ones that I bought through a dealer or something. I figured the ones I packed were obtained by people who loved me and therefore there was more of a sentimental attachment.
For instance, my Tom Rathman autograph isn't worth much money but my Dad hand picked it for my 40th birthday because he knows that Tom is my favorite player ever. The fact that my Dad paid attention to something that I liked and then he sought that out for me as a gift, put a value on that autograph that can not ever be matched. So that got packed. As well as the collector's bottle of wine with a Rathman label on it. So that is how I went about packing 49er stuff. :)

OMG! So glad you're all safe and the fire's out. I don't know what we'd do in that situation. The pets alone would be a nightmare to deal with. Gathering up everything else? I'm not sure I'd know where to start or if I could even find all of the important documents.

Yikes! I know how you feel. We had to "prepare to evacuate" a few times. It IS a pain to put everything back. As I looked around, there weren't many things I packed besides jewelry and photos. We now have a list of what to take if it happens again.

But,I thought you were a honorary member of the fire department now. *grin*

There's so many fires in California now. I'm glad that the one closest to you is out and that everyone is safe. Maybe the smoke is affecting you, too.
