Cool vs. Not Cool: Companion thread

So over on Tkit's blog she asked if you thought you were cool or not. So I have some questions:

1. What do you think Society considers to be "Cool"

2. What do you consider to be cool?

3. If you said you were cool, what is it that you think makes you cool? If you said you were not cool, what is it that you think makes you uncool?

I think it means something different to everyone. My younger brother would think it was cool if I got busted selling weed.

My kids think I'm cool when I listen to "their" music, or let them do certain things.

If I said I was cool, it would mean that I'm open-minded and do not judge others.
I would also be cool if I had chrome wheels on my car. *grin*

Other people are cool to me when they are ok with who they are, and able to laugh at things that make them "uncool".

I guess you're right. That cool means different things to different people. I just saw a lot of comments about not being liked or accepted by the "cool" people. I'm not asking anyone who they think those cool people are but I wonder what it is that makes them think that those people are the "cool" kids.

so to answer my own questions:
Young society thinks cool is fitting in with everyone else. Plain and simple. being good looking, dressing well, having all the hip things on tv and talking hip hop etc.

Cool to me? I honestly don't think I can answer that simply. I have many definitions. Cool is being humble, being true to oneself, being sure of oneself, being unsure of oneself. You know, the more i think about it, I don't think there is a such thing as cool in my mind. people aren't cool. People are, who they are. And I either like them or don't.

As for me, I do not fit societies idea of cool. I'm goofy and insecure and dorky.

1.Cool is what MTV/VH1/E!Online /People Magazine/US Weekly/etc tells us is cool. Case in point: Paris Hilton *gag*

2. Cool is something that is hard to define. I like people who are kind, polite, look you in the eye, treat everyone with respect, so I consider them cool. But on the other hand people who are very sure of themselves are cool too. People who are rude and mean are NOT cool.

3. I am a complete dork and have never considered myself cool.

1. Right now it seems to be "cool" is usually the celebrity flavor of the day. At least in general society. If everyone is doing Kaballah then that is cool. If everyone is getting pregnant and naming their kids Hairy Toe, Table and Fork then that is cool.

2. I consider cool to be an attitued of, you will do what you want(within normal society reasons) or think without regard to what others think. Having a high self esteem and knowing that you can't please everyone all the time. All you can be is true to yourself. In fact maybe that should be my answer is being "true to yourself". I am not sucking up here but I really would consider all of you "cool".

3. What makes me cool? I don't know. I always think I am uncool because I don't let my kids do a lot of things others their age do. There is pressure as a parent actually to let them do things that I am not comfortable with them doing. I am absolutely sure this will get worse as they get older. What makes me uncool? I get hiccups a lot and then burp after each hiccup.
Probably the bigfoot thing does not help much either.

In answer to your "what it is that makes them think that those people are the "cool" kids.",
I guess looking back at when I first started on OT, I'd say it was those who were everywhere, and interacted the most. It's the same way in school, it seems the really outgoing peeps are often deemed the "leaders" or, the "cool kids".

It's still surprising to me when one of the "cool kids" refers to *others* as the cool kids. Like they didn't know THEY were cool! *boggle*

MM, that's it.

The cool kids know everyone everywhere and have inside jokes with everyone.

For instance, Carey, Nutz, Augie, Arkie, etc. are the coolest kids 'cause they are funny, know everyone, everyone knows them. And expecially Carey is humble in her coolness. And she has a cool house.

Bunches of you are cool.

FTR, my kids think I'm the coolest mom in the world. We talk about everything, especially Sex (has it's place and time), Drugs (not so good for you if it affects your ability to live a good life), and Rock 'n Roll (the new stuff gives me a headache, I prefer R&B).

Cool people are people I admire and want to emulate. Online, they are generally positive people who are comfortable in their own (virtual) skin and able to portray that. A sense of humor and the ability to find a common ground are important.

Uncool people are people I do not want to emulate. Online this mostly means people who I think are generally insincere, like to jerk people around, take offense because they can, or are so self-centered that everyone else is a foil - not a friend.

Thank you , Lasann for the nice words. I think for me, I am entirely way too insecure to ever think I am cool. I turn red and squirm anytime someone pays me a compliment. Truthfully? anytime that someone gives me a compliment I think they are just fucking with me.

I think like MM, when I first came to OT, I had an idea of who the "cool" kids were. But once I got to know some of them on a more personal level, I found that they were cool but not in a "cool peep" way. Cool, as in, some of them were just down to earth peeps who did not think they ruled the skool as people thought of them. Yes, some of them felt they did and then they became uncool to me.

Breezy, I think it's "QUAFLAC"

I also agree with what you said Swami. *smooch*

Society thinks cool is doing brilliant chemistry, having a well equiped lab, elegant ideas and having purple gloves.

I think cool is doing elegant, brilliant chemistry, access to cool intruments and having purple gloves.

I am not cool. My gloves are green.

1. I agree that cool means different things to different people. For young kids, independence has always been cool and for them that often means doing things they shouldn't be (drinking, smoking, staying out late), or going places without parental supervision (spring break, weekends away). I guess for adults it's often the same...people that act very independently are usually seen as cool.

As a side note, is smoking cool anymore? Is smoking weed cool? I don't know.

2. Cool to me personally is someone that likes varied music, goes out to experience the local entertainment scene, travels extensively, reads a lot, is witty, open minded, dresses in a funky style, always has someone to go to lunch with, yet feels comfortable being alone, loves to laugh and knows how to get along with everyone.

3. I am uncool because I never think well on my feet...I take a bit to process witty responses & by then someone cool has already said it, or said it better. I never go out anywhere, I'm turning into a homebody. I used to be very hip with music, but in the last 10 years, the independent music scene and even popuslar music scene has exploded (with the help of the internet) and I can't keep track of it all. I used to buy cool clothes & accessories, but I now see them as a waste of money I could be spending elsewhere. I rarely make social plans due to inconveneience on where we live and not having a lot of extra cash to go out. I'd love to entertain more & be the cool place to hang out...but we live too far away from everyone.

1. I'm not really sure what society considers to be cool. I think Society's definition of cool changes from day to day.

2. What I consider to be cool? People who don't feel the need to conform, but also don't try to be different just to be different. Dressing to suit themselves, listening to whatever music they enjoy because they like it, regardless of what others think, and making no apologies for being different in some ways and not being different in others. I hope what I'm trying to say here is actually coming through, and not coming off as some inane rambling.

I would have commented earlier but I had a court appearance and then the judge's clerk entered the wrong order. *smacks forehead* They never even READ the proposed orders and just entered the bottom 3 out of 4. It was the fourth that was the correct one. Ugh. Soooo un-birth control device.

un-birth control device. <---Arkie's version of uncoil which is my computer spellcheck's version of uncool.

Being cool or uncool is subjective. My DH thinks that anyone who has a solid working knowledge of the Grateful Dead's evolution of music from 1968-1995 is cool. Now that we have Poopie, I think dog owners are cool, expecially lab owners. I do not think Paris Hilton is cool. I think her bank account is cool just not her.

Carey is the uberbity coolest DIG.

Sonication of glass slides sputter coated with 50 nm of Cr (to improve adhesion) and 200 nm of Au in an acetone/water bath followed by sonication with nanopowder C in an sp3 configureation will act to enhance the electrodeposition of C in a preferred crystal orientation.
