iPod
I bought this iPod thing. I'm not really sure what to do with it. *head tilt*
I believe you need to have an IQ just above mine to know how to work it.
I went out today and bought it for myself and then two hours later Michelle called to tell me that her cousins were going to go in together to buy me one for my birthday. Just my luck. The funny thing is she had called two of her cousins earlier in the day to ask them a question about an iPod but neither of them were home. Me being the patient soul that I am went out and bought one after work. Had I been able to wait just one more day I wouldn't have had to spend the money that I did. Now her cousins are pissed because they have to come up with another wonderful idea for a gift. LOL. I'm always a day early and a dollar tall.<--I made that up as an opposite to day late and dollar short. Think it will catch on?
Anyhow, back to this little device thingy that I have. Everybody said it was easy. I'm so intimidated by it that I'm afraid to take it out of the box. I did download iTunes. I think that is the first step. Maybe one step per day and tomorrow I will take it out of the box.

Don't you know that you're never supposed to buy anything for yourself in the weeks leading up to a birthday?
Maybe her cousins can teach how to use the iPod and call that your birthday present. *grin*
I do. But this was an exception.
1. I have not expressed any desire to own one. So Michelle would not have thought to tell anyone that I wanted it.
2. It's expensive and the kind of gift I would only expect from either Michelle or my parents.
3. Because I haven't expressed a want, I wouldn't think that her cousins would have thought of it.
4. It is sort of a necessity. We are having a party next Friday night and the music needs to be supplied on an MP3/iPod because the DJ device is only compatible with that. I haven't figured out on my own how to convert files to MP3 to save on a disc and figured an iPod was the way to go.
Very true, Arkie. But they better at least buy me a card with that gift. :)
FWIW, the salesboy and Augie both told me that it's all very user friendly. I just worry that I am not a friendly user and therefore I won't be able to figure it out.
Wouldn't you have been much more comfortable with an iPoot?

I have taken it out of the box. I have started to download songs from my CD's. This is long and difficult work.
Anyhow, I had forgotten than when Colleen, ack, I don't want to get into that, anyhow, Colleen had offered to buy me an iPod a while back and I had forgotten about it. So when she called tonight and found out about it, she told me that she is going to pay for my Best Buy bill today. So she got me the iPod, the iTunes card that I bought, the charger and the extended warranty. It pays to stay friends with your ex girlfriends. *grin* Normally I would not let a friend spend this much on me. But there is some history and some other circumstances that go with Colleen, so I am letting her buy this package deal for me. Very very nice of her.
But, she had a good idea for Michelle's cousins. There is a boom box that you can get and there is also the car converter thingy and also an iMac store where I can get all kinds of stuff for this new toy of mine. Michelle is going to tell her cousins about those things.
Jen, I thought you were buying me a Hummer or a Mustang? That's what you said toda, no?

Now, when you pay for all those songs from iTunes & your player breaks in a year, you'll be SOL until you get another iPod (or someone will finally figure out how to decode those secure MP4 files). *tsk tsk* You just want to be hip like the cool kids.

Maybe everyone can get you iTunes gift cards for your birthday now. That would be very useful.
If you ever want to convert wav files over to MP3 files, I've done it with some online programs quite easily (free trials on most of them).
Kim, I bought the extended warranty. *sticks out tongue* It is a full replacement warranty. It has bumper to bumper coverage and if anything breaks, they replace the entire player, not just the broken part.
I really need to learn how to do that conversion thing.
What programs have you used that will show me how?
Both Michelle's and my car play MP3s but they play the disc MP3s. Her sister usually burned the CDs for us since I don't know how.

DMCpowerAmp is the one I thought would convert MP4s from iTunes (for my niece), but it won't convert the SECURE MP4s. It's fairly easy to use, but I like Switch better. They are both fairly self explanatory. Their websites offer decent descriptions and instructions.

I did buy the charger that plugs into the wall. I didn't know that I had a choice. Salesboy made it seem as if I had to have that. He didn't explain that I could charge it through my computer. Colleen is the one who told me that last night.

It's silver, Augie. For some reason Best Buy only had silver. I got the Nano and they only had the sivler in the nano.
Don't be afraid of the iPod. I promise. You cannot kill it. Mine is 2 years old now and I've dropped it, left it in the car in the heat and in the cold, etc. It spends most of it's time in my purse, which means it's often thrown from point A to point B or rudely stuffed into my desk drawer or bumped and shuffled around as I rifle through my purse looking for other crap.
Two major accessories I HIGHLY recommend: 1. some kind of protective case. Don't get one of those cheapo socks. Get something durable, either rubber-y or a hard plastic that will protect it from scratches, etc. 2. If you plan on using it in the car (where I use mine most often) I suggest getting a car charger. My personal pick is the I-Go car charger (available at Radio Shack.) The I-Go has changable tips so you can get whatever tip you need for whatever product. I have one charger, but tips for my iPod and my cell phone. When I get a new cell phone, I just spend $5 for a new tip instead of $25 for a new charger.
Wow I just wrote a lot of crap. Seriously though, have fun with your iPod. I love mine. She's been good to me and I'll miss her when I sell her to a friend this weekend. (I'm upgrading to a video model, but DH would only allow me to do that if I sold my old one. My friend is paying me $125 which is a pretty good deal, considering she's getting the iPod, the docking station, and the 1400 songs already installed.)
OH! I can't believe I forgot this. You mentioned in your post how long it was taking to put your CDs into iTunes. Instead of ripping them through iTunes (which takes FOR-EVER!) use Windows Media Player to rip them, then just add them to your iTunes library. It goes much faster.
