Tell me it will be okay

*sigh* My oldest cat is 18 years old. It seems that her claws have gotten too long and they ended up curling and growing into her pads. And now her pads are splitting. We noticed blood on Michelle's chair and it is coming from Shug's paws. She has a vet appointment today and the vet is going to get the claws out of her pads. My worry is that because of her age, she is going to have some sort of major trauma over this. I'm worried that they may have to sedate her in some way. What if because of her age, her heart can't handle that stress. What if they have to operate on her? What if they have to declaw her? What if, what if, what if. I hate the what if game but these are all possibilities. I'm just worried that any kind of stress is going to be too much for her poor little heart. I'm basically freaking out right now. Michelle will call me when it is all done but I have no idea what time that will be.
So tell me how it's not as bad as I think it will be and my baby will come home safe and sound this morning. *sob*

EDITED FOR UPDATE: Michelle just called. The vet is keeping her because they can't just simply clip her claws. They are going to lightly sedate her because she tried to bite them. They laughed though because she was purring the entire time that she was trying to bite them. They did say that she was in great shape for being 18 years old and I guess the lady even called another vet lady in and said "can you believe this cat is 18?" So they are happy about the shape she is in. Anyhow, they are going to sedate her and then soak her paws in an iodine solution and then take the claws out. She will have to be on an antibiotic because one of her paws is slightly infected. Total of three claws on two different paws. They will call when it is all done.

Awww, carey, that terrible! I'm sure all the longtime kitty parents will assure you it will be ok. At least she will be more comfortable. I think having the other cats around will help her recover.

If nothing else, this story has inspired me to inspect my oldest cats rear paws tonight. We never clip them. They walk in our cement basement enough that it helps file them down, though.

*hugs*

Awww sweetie. I'm sorry. I'm sure she'll be fine though. They just might have to trim the nails down and put cute little booties on her feet to help her pads heal. She'd be a fashion plate! *hugs*

(I have no idea if they actually have cat booties, but it seems reasonable to me.)

Vets are super experienced at this stuff Carey and I am sure you trust your vet very much. If she requires an operation, ask them to do bloodwork first to see how she will tolerate the anasthesia...but I am sure they will give you that option.

*hug* I know it is stressful when our babies are away from us.

Jen, you know that 1/2"-1" wrap stuff that looks like a strip of gauze, yet it adheres to itself? They have that in cool fashion colors & wrap kitty paws in that.

Bartleby had purple & Loki had blue.

Booties, gauze- close enough. :D

Shug tore off a cast with her teeth when she was a kitten after she broke her leg. I can't imagine what she would do to a booty or gauze.
I can't emphasize enough what a brutal and bad ass cat she is. She seriously frightens me when her claws start swatting.

Thanks for updating. Sounds like they are confident she'll be just fine. She'll be happy because she's bound to get spoiled by you two in the coming days.

So they didn't seem too concerned? That's good news. LOL @ her purring. So cute.

*hugs* I know nothing about cats but I'm sure the vet will take wonderful care of your furbaby.

I'm absolutely terrified of cat's claws. My SIL had a Siamese that scratched me way too many times. They finally had to declaw him. I liked him a lot more after that.

Thank you everybody. My belly has been upset all morning. *pout*

I will Glow. I am especially interested in that plug in thing. It might help boy cat too because he is such a chicken shit.
God forbid a doorbell ring on the TV. Sets him flying up the stairs and under the bed.

Poor Shug. Did you clip his claws on a regular basis?

I remember our trainer telling us to make sure to clip our doggie's claws because the same thing could happen and it's not a good thing.

Sounds like Shug is an amazing kitty and will do just fine. Sooooooooooo relieved as you must be.

Will he be going home or does he have to stay at the vets?

*BIG BIG HUGS*

Putting pills down kitty's throat is fun. Not! I'm going to check my cats claws tonight. Never thought of it before. Eek.

I don't even think the United States Marine Corps could get a pill down this cat's throat. It will have to be liquid and Michelle and I will put on full body armour, tackle her to the ground, put our full weight on her, use the jaws of life to pry her lips open and then shoot it down her throat with a water gun. I just see no other way.

She's one bad mutha.. Shut your mouth! I'm just talking 'bout the Shug.

She will be fine. The vets say she's nice and healthy, that's good.

PS- We went to San Francisco Oven for lunch and I thought of you. :)

To have a healthy 18 year old cat means you've been doing something incredibly right with her. She'll be fine.

{{hugs}}

P.S. Jen? Why didn't you think of *me* too, while you were eating there? pout*

(and don't say it's because I don't live in or around San Francisco, that's no excuse!)
