My non PC post

If you don't like the laws of our country, feel free to leave. I don't remember anyone writing out an invitation for you to come here illegally. If I had come here from another country and had gone about it in all the proper ways, I would be pissed off that a bunch of people would want to be able to step ahead of those who have been waiting and those who have gone about this in a legal manner.

I struggle with the whole issue. I do wish the governments of both countries could do something to make it all right.

However, coming into this country legally, after spending thousands of dollars and a lot of time, it does irk me that they expect a free ride.

How about the complete two-facedness absurdity of Mexico's policy on immigration which states that, among other things, illegal immigration is a felony, that immigrants are not eligible for ANY governmental assistance, that immigrants may not display foreign flags, and that immigrants may not protest against the Mexican government.

Mexico, change your immigration laws and the get back to us.

I agree with you, Carey. There was a gentleman on the news this morning, who is a hispanic community leader somewhere (not sure what state he is actually located in), expressing his view that the illegal workers have as much right to be here as anyone else. Total BS, in my opinion. You're illegal, ergo, you have no rights. End of discussion.

*sigh* This topic kills me. Don't get me wrong. I agree with you completely yet I feel wrong to feel this way. I don't know if what I mean is coming across.

I live very close to the town Farmingville. I don't know if any know of it but it is where 2 day workers were tricked into thinking they were being picked up for a job but instead where beaten. Other incidents there have resulted in house burnings and raids on overcrowded homes. The 7-11's are packed every morning with these workers. If I was by myself and pull up for a cup of coffee they would crowd around the car becuase they think you might have a job for them. You don't have to pull up in a landscaping truck. It is frightening. Please beleive me it is not because they are hispanic but because about 30 men are blocking you.

Some of the homes have literally 20 cars in front of them. You can see in the windows of homes the bunk beds lined up. Overcrowded homes with children going to local schools but their parents don't pay taxes.

There is a huge sub-economy going on as well. Women go to these homes and make a living cooking for all these men.

Again I am rambling. j

A country either controls its borders or it doesn't, and our country has chosen not to for a very long time.

I feel bad that many extended families are a spaghetti-like mixture of legal and illegal immigrants. I would like to be fair to them in some way (if I could figure out what that way might be) but we have to control our borders!

It drives me nuts when I hear illegals say they are just "pursuing the American Dream" like all the other immigrants before them have. No! It doesn't work that way. Because guess what? If our borders mean nothing then there are maybe a billion people who could arrive within a few months. From everywhere. They too will come for the American Dream. And we can't embrace & care for them all. Hard facts.

They need to go after the people who hire illegals. If they can't get jobs, then that's a good start to getting control of the problem.

I have lots more to say but instead I'll just shut up. And of course mullet-wearing, basketball-playing Chinese midgets should be allowed in as an endangered species.

I don't want anyone to get the wrong impression. I am not against these people. Mexican or otherwise. I can udnerstand them coming here. I have been to the places where they live and it is horrible.
My real contempt is that they come here and then get mad at our laws and then hold these grand protests. telling us how we should run our country.
AND? I blame our contry. Our government who has made it so easy and inviting to come here.
I do NOT want to close our borders. I want people to come here and build a better life for themselves and their families. But i want them to do it respectfully and legally. Right now, today, they are doing neither.
And I personally think that what they are doing today is hurting their cause more than helping.

I too agree, Swami, with going after those who hire them. It may not dent big business but it sure as hell will hurt the smaller business when they have to start paying huge fines. I say go after anyone who is hiring them. Like you said, if there are no jobs here for them, then they won't be so quick to break the border and come here. I also think that landlords should be fined if they knowingly rent to illegals. And if the illegals find someone to rent a house and we find out that they are renting for illegals, then they should be fined as well. It's time to take back our country and I think money is the one way to do that.
I am all for patrolling our borders. Policing them, controlling them. I'm not sure that a wall is the answer though.

I think there is no good and fast solution to this. I think the only solution is to find a way for us to not provide what they need in order to stay here. If we cut off their resources then they won't want to be here.

We need one day a month where we let some minority, any minority, stay home. It would make the roadways a lot less crowded.

Okay, on to my semi-serious answer. I pretty much agree with everything that Carey and Swami said. Except, for this one nagging issue - and it may only be here in Texas, I don't know. Most of the illegal Mexicans are doing jobs that our boys and girls are "too good" to do or "don't get paid what they are worth". It's a Catch 22 around here. The labor intensive jobs (construction, lawn care, day labor type jobs, for example) don't pay well and have minimal benefits, if any. Who wants that? And the companies and individuals get off cheap and easy, somewhat reducing their expenses and putting cash into a sucktastic economy - ours and Mexico's.

It's gotten to a point, IMO, that is almost no win for all involved.

momma, I see what you are saying...but, have kids decided they won't do them, or have parents & kids decided those are jobs "stupid immigrants" that can't even speak English can do, my kid/I can do better? I think there may be an undertone to that.

I think jobs like manual labor and fast food are becoming perceived as for the poor or uneducated. A growing diverse population, high drop out rate and socioeconomic gap may be leading kids to associate some jobs with class status, thus THAT'S why they aren't willing to do the job. Plus, the American lust for more retail stores, mid-upscale restaurants & amusement parks has led to more of these jobs for kids.
