New York, New York

Anybody know anything about new York City? I may be planning a trip there in August for Michelle's birthday. For the most part, I can figure everything out that I want and need. But my two questions (for now) are where to stay and which airport to fly into.
We will be going to a Broadway play. I can rent a car if need be due to safety issues staying near Broadway. I'm looking for middle of the road as far as pricey hotels. I don't want to spend $500 a night for the room but I also am not looking to spend just $50 a night. Something mid range in a safe neighborhood.
Which airport is closest or does it make a difference? What are my choices for that area? I'm guessing La Guardia and JFK? Is that right?
Any help is appreciated.

Oh in answer to your questions it does not matter which airport, do whatever has the most conveinent/cheapest flight...also check out Newark too. They are all the same distance really.

Hotels it depends on what time of the week. Mid week Broadway area might be less but downtown more. Weekend Broadway area is much more of course.

You definately do not want to rent a car. It is just not needed. You can take a cab from the airport.

So staying at a hotel downtown is safe? I've skeeery stories about NYC. *grin*

I'll post when I book my flight so that all of blogland can book at the same time. *grin*

It's still up in the air. I am going to look at costs. Traveling and staying in Vegas is cheaper. But the gambling part pretty much makes it even with the extra costs going to NYC. She asked me to look into both and then she will make a decision. *grin*

I've only driven to New York. I will agree with zombs about not renting a car. You can get anywhere and everywhere by cab or subway.

I will tell you this, and I'm not trying to freak you out. But it's very disturbing to me. There was that You Tube clip about the KFC rats. Well, Inside Edition did a special as well about rats. It's disgusting. Absolutely horrible. They're everywhere. I'd be very concerned about where I ate in NY.

I saw that thing on rats. SF has a lot of them in Chinatown but nothing on the same scale as NYC. I imagine that we will do one fancy dinner. Probably on the day that we go to see The Color Purple. Otherwise, we aren't super picky about food. Except rats. I don't want to eat rats or eat with rats. *makes face*

PS I will meet you for coffee.

Oh believe me, Monsty. I already planned on packing my Red Sox shirt and wearing it proudly. I don't even care if I get beat up. *grin*
Yay. You and Michelle could finally meet. *hops*

Oh you can wear a Red Sox stuff. I bet no one would even notice. There are so many teams here and so many people that not everyone is so wrapped up in one team and not even regional teams.

Now if you were goiing to a Yankee REdsox game then it might be different.

I would totally wear a Red Sox shirt if I were going to a Sox/Yankee game. I already wear my 49er stuff at 49er/Raider games and that's like putting your life at risk. *grin*

1. Airport doesn't matter. Cabs are easy to grab at the airport and costs are moderate to get downtown. I think it was about $25 for me from LaGuardia.

2. I stayed in upper Midtown at The Wellington. It was ok. Fairly clean, small rooms, but not horridly small. It was about $120/night on Priceline at the time. It was a nice location.

3. Safety. I walked EVERYWHERE by myself and felt safe. I didn't stroll through Central Park at midnight, of course, but as long as I stayed in Midtown on busy streets, I felt just fine walking. That includes the area around Broadway and Times Square.

4. I took cabs or walked everywhere. It wasn't bad pricewise or footwise. :-)

Don't rent a car it will only be a headache. Like people said - cabs, public transport & walk.

You're seeing The Color Purple? That sounds very cool. I would try to see more than one play if I could. And visit some of the great museums. I'm a fan of David Letterman so I would try to get tickets for a taping of his show too. I think you can get then from his website.

August will be very hot & sticky & stinky in NYC. Well, I think NYC stinks.

Where are you going for your high end dinner? Are you going to eat street food?

Well, we are seeing The Color Purple because that is Michelle's favorite movie of all time. When it hit Broadway, she kept saying how much she wanted to see it. She also wants me to try and get tickets to The View or Regis & Kelly.
No clue on the high end dinner. I know absolutely zero about New York. Would Coney Island hot dogs be considered high end? *grin*

Tavern on the Green is supposed to be nice without being trendy. It's a beautiful location in Central Park.

Personally, I've always wanted to hit a Bobby Flay restaurant, so I'd do Mesa Grill or Bar American. But that's just me. I'm sure I'd miss out on other fabulous, less "pop culture" restaurants.

Airport-wise, I like LaGuardia but everyone is right, it really doesn't matter. It all depends on where your airline goes.

Everyone is right. Don't rent a car.

There are some great summer airfares from the west coast to NY. Seriously - it's a route that doesn't tend to be all that profitable for some airlines so they just try to fill up the planes and you can get some really good fares. You have to watch for them but they're not all that uncommon.

Weekend hotel deals can be found too, even in Times Square. With a lot of them you can find special packages that will include the room and some amenity, like breakfast for two, or a massage, or a bottle of wine at check-in or some little perk like that. They don't wind up being any more expensive than the regular rooms, but you get a little something extra.

Hilton, for example, has a Romance Package that includes early check-in, a bottle of sparkling wine, access to the pool or whirlpool if there is one, in-room full breakfast for two, buy one get one free entree in the hotel restaurant (lunch or dinner) and late check-out. They also have a Museum of Modern Art package that includes admission tickets, and some shopping coupons. It says it starts at $279/night.

That's just Hilton. All the chains have specials of some sort so they're worth exploring.

If you're a member of AAA you can get discounts on hotel rooms. AAA membership is something like $50/year and can save you 10% on a room so if you are doing $500/night consider the AAA and make your money back.

The AARP discount is the same as the AAA discount. *runs away*

Right now, checking 6 months out, you're going to see a lot of rack rates because the hotels are not as likely to load discount rates into their systems. If you're a little adventurous, you can wait and see what pops up. I fly by the seat of my pants booking hotels pretty often.

Staying near Broadway is great. I stayed in a hostel half a block off time square and felt quite safe. I love New York. You can walk everywhere and the delis are great!

P.S. Even though no one does it, you can buy drinks in the delis and drink them. I had to ask because I say no-one drinking who wasn't at a restaurant. So Mr Bob and I had fantastic salads and Mike's Hard lemonade for less that $15 dollars just off Time Square.

And by delis, I mean places with salads and snadwiches and yummy things, not the heaping pile of meat delis (those they were good too)

Papaya King!

Hot dogs and a fruit smoothie! Yummy!

Oh and the rat thing was in Queens in a Taco Bell. If you come here and go to a Taco Bell I will have to shoot you.

Heh, I had Papaya King when I was there based on web recommendations. It was a slightly frightening experience as they really rush you through the line. However, the hot dogs were New Yorkrific!

I stayed in the Times Square locale, can't remember the hotel. What bothered me was the noise all.night.long. I have been thinking about going again and researched hotels. They rate hotels by the thickness of the glass to quiet the constant traffic noise.

We walked everywhere and took the subway to Battery Park to get the boat over to the Statue.

Broadway was such a thrill to me.

We stayed at the Milford Plaza right near Times Square. It was very nice. They offer an upgrade to the "Club Room", which includes a decent continental breakfast. The upgrade was only $20, which was worth it for us. Plus you can go into the Club Room throughout the day for soda, water, and free internet.
